OpenAI To Use Google Cloud For ChatGPT
Artificial intelligence start-up OpenAI says it plans to use Google’s (GOOGL) cloud infrastructure for its increasingly popular ChatGPT assistant.OpenAI says it is turning to Google Cloud to help meet its growing need for more computing power. Until now, privately held OpenAI had relied exclusively on Microsoft (MSFT) for its cloud capacity. However, relations between those companies have become strained, with Microsoft labeling OpenAI as a “competitor.”Now, OpenAI has added Google to its list of suppliers, specifying that ChatGPT and its application programming interface will use the Google Cloud Platform, as well as computing capacity from Microsoft, CoreWeave (CRWV), and Oracle (ORCL). The announcement is viewed as a win for Google parent company Alphabet, whose cloud unit is younger and smaller than rivals Amazon (AMZN) and Microsoft. Microsoft, which has invested more than $10 billion U.S. in OpenAI, has a right of first refusal anytime the AI start-up needs more computing resources.Sam Altman, OpenAI’s chief executive officer (CEO), has said repeatedly that the start-up company faces capacity constraints.GOOGL stock has declined 3% this year to trade at $182.97 U.S. per share.
