Asian Investors Digest Trump-Xi Call, Stocks Mixed
Asia-Pacific markets traded mixed as investors assessed the phone call between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.In Japan, the Nikkei 225 gained 187.12 points, or 0.5%, to 37,741.61. In Hong Kong, the Hang Seng scaled back 114.43 points, or 0.5%, to 23,792.54.Trump and Xi spoke on Thursday and agreed that officials from the U.S. and China will meet soon to continue negotiations aimed at ending the ongoing trade war.The call, which Trump described as “very good,” lasted for about 90 minutes, focusing “almost entirely” on trade and yielded a “very positive conclusion for both countries,” Trump wrote in a Truth Social post.In other markets Markets in Korea were closed for holiday. In Shanghai, the CSI 300 dipped 3.58 points, or 0.1%, to 3,873.98.In Taiwan, the Taiex index gave up 13.77 points, or 0.1%, to 21,660.66.In Singapore, the Straits Times index edged up 16.6 points, or 0.4%, to 3,934.29In New Zealand, the NZX 50 retreated 13.67 points, or 0.1%, to 12,563.48.In Australia, the ASX 200 removed 23.2 points, or 0.3%, to 8,515.73.
